EMEL launched a new application for Lisbon's shared bike system, GIRA, in a context where shared soft mobility systems are playing an increasingly decisive role in environmental quality and urban planning. The extensive accumulated experience in managing the service made it possible to identify improvement opportunities and technical challenges that motivated the decision to fully rebuild the technological ecosystem that supports the application.
Among the confirmed new features, the highlights are a more intuitive interface, an improved experience, a new digital wallet and facilitated customer support. The service is present in all parishes of Lisbon, through more than 200 stations and a fleet of more than two thousand bicycles.
GIRA is now integrated into the routine of more than 40 thousand users, who make more than nine thousand trips daily. Since the beginning, 70 million kilometers have already been traveled, equivalent to more than 1,700 laps around the Earth and more than 90 round trips to the Moon. These numbers contributed to achieving a reduction in CO2 emissions of more than 8,400 tons.
Carlos Silva, President of EMEL, stated that this is an important milestone in the modernization of the GIRA service that offers Lisbon a simpler, more sustainable and accessible mobility for everyone.
