Cleveland City Council approved on Monday (9/14) Resolution 1047-2026, which renames a section of Lake Erie as "Gulf of Cleveland." The measure covers points within the eastern and western boundaries of the city's coast, spanning a two-mile strip into the lake's waters.
With the approval, all new maps and official documents issued by the city will adopt the new name. The City Council will also notify Apple and Google to implement the change on their platforms and digital maps.
The decision comes after recent actions by President Donald Trump, who signed an executive order at the end of last month to change the name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America." Last year, the Republican had already ordered the federal government to use a different name for bodies of water in the region.
