Célia Pessegueiro expressed criticism of the Regional Government following the seizure of traditional fishing gear carried out in Caniçal, a traditional fishing area in Madeira. The socialist deputy focused on the issue of the region's fishing traditions and the impact of government measures on local fishermen.
The Socialist Party of Madeira (PS-M) intervened in the matter requesting a specific regional framework for fishing activity. The political formation argues that solutions must be found that allow European and national standards to be reconciled with the traditional fishing practices carried out in the region.
The episode of the seizure of traditional fishing gear in Caniçal has become a point of discord between the opposition and the regional executive. The authorities are said to have applied current legislation, but opposition parties consider that such application did not take into account the specificities and traditions of Madeiran fishing.
This situation is part of a broader debate about how European fishing legislation is implemented in Portuguese autonomous regions. PS-M argues that it is necessary to create conditions so that traditional fishing activities can continue to be carried out in accordance with legislation, but in a manner adapted to regional reality.
