A polluting discharge is affecting the Vala de Alpiarça, causing bad smells, visible changes in water quality and fish deaths in the Parque do Carril area. On September 10th, O ALMEIRINENSE was on site and spoke with locals about the environmental situation observed in this section of the Vala.
According to information gathered from local residents, the first signs appeared in the first days of September, with several dead fish found at that location. Water hyacinths have again occupied a large part of the Vala de Alpiarça's flow. However, in the Parque do Carril area, where this invasive species is regularly removed, it is possible to observe more clearly the existing changes in the water and a trail with an apparent upstream origin.
The Municipality of Alpiarça confirmed, in a statement, that it has been monitoring the occurrence since September 4th, describing the situation as being "marked by altered water quality and the occurrence of fish kills".
