The trial designated Operation Teia begins, involving former local officials accused of corruption. The case reaches court more than seven years after the arrest of Joaquim Couto, former mayor of Santo Tirso, and his wife at the time, Manuela Sousa.
Joaquim Couto was president of the Santo Tirso Municipal Council. Manuela Sousa was, at the time, his wife and a businesswoman in communication and marketing.
The two were arrested more than seven years ago, with the case taking all this time to reach trial. The charges relate to corruption crimes.
