Bilal Chughtai, an artificial intelligence researcher who recently resigned from Google DeepMind, publicly warned that humanity is running out of time to prevent AI from causing widespread harm. He posted his warning on both X and LinkedIn on Monday, becoming the latest company employee to express concern about the direction the technology is taking.
Chughtai stated he witnessed firsthand the development of AI during his time at Alphabet, the parent company of Google. He declared he is extremely concerned about the trajectory the technology is following and said he sincerely believes AI has the potential to end humanity. During his time at the company, he specifically worked in the areas of safety and AI alignment.
Chughtai's departure adds to a series of statements from former employees and technology experts who have been warning about the risks associated with the accelerated development of artificial intelligence systems. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the former employee's statements.
