Portugal's North region recorded a population growth of 187 thousand inhabitants between 2021 and 2025. This data represents a significant milestone for the region, which has faced demographic challenges in recent decades.
The president of the Commission for Coordination and Regional Development of the North (CCDR-N), Álvaro Santos, commented on the results, stating that the data "demonstrates that the North has entered a new demographic cycle". Santos's declaration suggests that this trend represents a positive and structural shift in the region's population dynamics.
The observed growth contrasts with depopulation trends that had been previously noted in several areas of the northern interior of the country. This population increase may be associated with factors such as the return of emigrants, the attraction of new residents to urban centers such as Porto and Braga, and the region's economic dynamism.
