MEO network failures recorded throughout Monday left thousands of users without stable access to fixed internet, mobile network and television signal in various parts of the country. The telecommunications operator officially justified the widespread interruption with a "mass attack" directed at its international infrastructure, ensuring that there was no intrusion or access to company or customer data and that service was restored.
The problems resulted in a continuous wave of user complaints reporting the inability to access foreign-hosted websites or establish communications through digital platforms. The constraints affected both domestic consumption and professional activities that depend on continuous connectivity. Several service monitoring platforms also indicated slight fluctuations in other operators, a common phenomenon when a large-scale block on a leading operator indirectly overloads alternative connections.
However, the justification of a direct attack contrasts with observations from independent experts. Records from the Cloudflare Radar platform identified severe disruptions at the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) level, suggesting anomalies in traffic routing, namely deviations and configuration errors in shared routes between external networks. This type of failure can cause a bottleneck in data conduits that is easily confused with a deliberate saturation attack.
MEO chose not to publicly detail the technical vectors associated with the alleged attack, stating that internal verification work continues. So far, no audit reports have been made public to confirm whether the BGP protocol disruption constituted a tool of coordinated external action or resulted from a configuration failure in operator interconnection. The incident reopens the discussion about the resilience of national telecommunications against oscillations in international transit networks.
