Russia called on Tuesday (15) for space to remain free of armaments, after the United States Space Force confirmed it had positioned "space control weapons in orbit" for the first time. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that "we believe space should be free of any weapons" and advocated for a broad international consensus to work toward the complete demilitarization of space.
China also made an appeal to the United States government on the same Tuesday, asking the country to "stop preparing for war" in space. The country expressed concern over the militarization of the space environment by the United States.
The United States Space Force announced on Monday that it had placed "space control weapons in orbit capable of defending against hostile actions from adversaries." The agency did not reveal details about the weapons positioned.
When making the announcement, the American Space Force cited China as a threat, stating that Beijing "develops and operates space and counterspace capabilities as part of a military modernization strategy."
