Domingos Montagner was at the height of his career on Brazilian television ten years ago, playing the lead in the soap opera "Velho Chico," aired in the prime time slot on Globoplay. The actor, originally from São Paulo, was 54 years old and was recognized as one of the biggest leading men of his generation, also being very versatile and able to move easily between comedy and drama.
On September 15, 2016, the cast of the soap opera was filming in Canindé de São Francisco, in the interior of Sergipe. During a break from filming in the early afternoon, Domingos took the opportunity to take a swim in the São Francisco River.
The actor ended up being dragged to the bottom by a very strong current and drowned. The tragedy caused great consternation throughout Brazil.
In addition to being an actor, Domingos Montagner was a theater producer, clown, and circus artist. He was the father of three children and was described as a person full of charisma.
