El Salvador's Justice convicted on Monday, for the first time, a man to life imprisonment for feminicide. The sentence was handed down by the country's prosecutor's office, which announced it had obtained "the first conviction to life imprisonment for aggravated feminicide".
The defendant was found guilty of killing a neighbor with a bladed weapon. According to the prosecutor's office, the crime occurred in August last year, in the city of Santa Ana, located west of the Salvadoran capital. The crime involved a bladed weapon as the murder instrument.
This conviction was only possible due to a legal reform promoted by President Nayib Bukele, which allowed the application of the life imprisonment penalty. Previously, this penalty was prohibited by the country's Constitution. On the previous Friday, Justice had already handed down the first life imprisonment sentence against a man convicted of murder, marking a significant change in the Salvadoran criminal system.
