The Portuguese Institute of Corporate Governance (IPCG) argues that sustainability must move beyond being confined to reports and become central to business strategy. According to the organization, climate risks, ESG information quality, and regulatory requirements are transforming sustainability into a management and governance matter, with direct impact on business strategies and access to financing for companies.
The IPCG will debate this issue at its Annual ESG Conference, on September 15, at the Centro Cultural de Belém, in Lisbon. The event, dedicated to the theme "Business Strategy, Data Quality and Financing," is held in partnership with Deloitte, EY, KPMG, and PwC, and brings together representatives from companies, financial institutions, regulatory bodies, and specialists in sustainability and corporate governance.
For João Moreira Rato, President of the IPCG Board, sustainability cannot be limited to the departments responsible for reporting, requiring the involvement of board of directors, since it influences the strategy and risk management of organizations. The official argues that solid governance is essential to transform sustainability objectives into informed decisions and long-term value creation.
Among the topics under analysis at the conference will be the influence of climate risks on credit decisions, the importance of ESG data quality, and the evolution of the regulatory framework and reporting obligations. With this initiative, the IPCG aims to promote a debate that goes beyond mere compliance, positioning sustainability as a central factor in business competitiveness.
