On International Democracy Day, Patrícia Calca, a political scientist, university lecturer and researcher, warned that Portugal is "weakened" regarding the functioning of its democratic institutions.
The specialist identified problems both in the internal functioning of institutions and in the relationship of citizens with politics, considering that these factors contribute to the weakening of Portuguese democracy.
Calca warned of behaviors that can "subvert" the functioning of Parliament, pointing to a threat to the traditional mechanisms of control and oversight that are essential in a representative democracy.
This intervention comes in the context of the commemorative date that celebrates the fundamental principles of democracy and serves as a moment of reflection on the state of democracies around the world.
