Colleagues Bet Together on Lottery, Win R$ 20 Million and One is Arrested After Refusing to Share the Prize in Hong Kong

oglobo15 September 2026 at 08:00

A 36-year-old man was arrested in Hong Kong on Friday (11), suspected of refusing to share with 14 colleagues a prize of approximately HK$ 30 million (R$ 20 million) from the Mark Six lottery. The group of 15 people had pooled money to buy the winning ticket, according to the South China Morning Post.

The ticket was purchased by the 36-year-old man, who would also be responsible for the account designated to receive the prize. After the bet was drawn, however, he allegedly informed colleagues that he would not share the money. Part of the group's members worked at the Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD).

On Wednesday night (9), the colleagues met in Aberdeen to try to resolve the impasse. The conversation lasted about 30 minutes, but the man maintained his decision to keep the prize. A 53-year-old colleague went to the police at 10:06 PM, concerned with the possibility of the suspect disappearing with the money.

Why this matters

The case illustrates the legal consequences of refusing to comply with informal agreements about collective lottery bets, involving a significant amount of R$ 20 million. The suspect's arrest shows that Hong Kong authorities treat such disputes seriously, potentially affecting how betting groups deal with similar situations in the region.
