Electronic money accounts in Mozambique significantly exceeded traditional bank accounts in the second quarter of 2026. According to data from the Bank of Mozambique, 130.9 electronic money accounts were registered per 100 adults, a value almost four times higher than conventional bank accounts.
The Bank of Mozambique is the institution responsible for collecting and publishing these statistical data on the penetration of financial services in the country. This disparity between the adoption of electronic money and traditional banking reflects a global trend in developing markets, where mobile and digital solutions have reached populations that remain excluded from the conventional banking system.
