The prohibitions implemented on the Via de Cintura Interna (VCI) in Porto come into force today with the aim of removing approximately 4,000 trucks from the city centre. The restrictions apply daily between 07:00 and 21:00.
The measure comes as a response to the high volume of heavy traffic that crossed the urban area. Every day, approximately 8,000 heavy goods vehicles passed through the VCI, contributing to congestion and pollution problems in downtown Porto.
The authorities thus intend to divert heavy vehicle traffic to alternative routes, reducing environmental impact and improving the quality of life in the central area of the city. Trucks affected by the ban must use alternative routes outside the permitted hours.
