Ministry finds solution for students without spots in Lisbon schools

Expresso15 September 2026 at 00:32

The Ministry of Education and about 30 school directors from Lisbon reached a solution for students who were still awaiting placement in the city's schools. The agreement was reached this Monday and provides for the distribution of students across existing classes in the region's schools.

The solution found aims to resolve the problem of students without spots in Lisbon schools, allowing them to be integrated into classes with available capacity. This measure was made possible thanks to the collaboration between the Ministry and local school directors.

However, the situation is not resolved throughout the country. In other municipalities, significant problems persist, where hundreds of students continue without a spot in public education. These cases still await a resolution from the education authorities.

Why this matters

This solution directly benefits Lisbon families who were facing uncertainty about the placement of their children in public schools. Although the problem has been mitigated in the capital, the situation in other municipalities shows that the public education vacancy crisis is a problem affecting families across the country.

Opinion: Alexandra Manes | It is urgent to stop

This opinion article by Alexandra Manes argues that the strike is a collective, voluntary and temporary interruption of work, representing a manifestation of those who are fed up with searching for solutions to a world in despair. The author argues that, in its most genuine form, the strike constitutes one of the maximum expressions of the democratic regime, allowing the population to exert collective pressure on those who decide.
