A clandestine cryptocurrency "mine" was discovered in Puebla, Mexico, in an area supplied by the Nuevo Necaxa dam. Local authorities are investigating electricity theft crimes and potential money laundering associated with the operation.
Police were led to the ruined building not only by the noise but mainly by the abnormal electricity consumption. The operation required an unusual amount of energy for the communities in the Sierra Norte region of the Mexican state.
To power and cool hundreds of specialized computer equipment, the energy demand was extremely high, which ultimately exposed the presence of illegal cryptocurrency mining.
Authorities suspect the operation may be related to the laundering of illicit funds, although investigations are still ongoing to determine the full extent of the criminal activity.
