From this Tuesday, heavy trucks are prohibited from circulating on the VCI (Via de Cintura Interna) in Porto. This new rule aims to divert heavy vehicle traffic to the CREP (Circular Regional Exterior do Porto), in a significant change to the mobility of the Porto Metropolitan Area.
The change implies that all trucks will have to use the CREP as an alternative route. In return, users of this outer ring road will be exempt from toll payments, a measure that aims to compensate for the increased journey and attract heavy vehicles to the new route.
The implementation of this prohibition comes as a response to the congestion and safety problems on the VCI, which is one of the main access and circulation routes in the city of Porto. The infrastructure, which already faces high volumes of traffic, has been particularly affected by the presence of heavy vehicles.
This change promises to significantly transform circulation patterns in the region, affecting not only road freight transport operators, but also other users of the Porto motorways.
