The president of Hospital Amadora-Sintra admitted, in an interview with Observador, that immigration is having a growing impact on the demand for healthcare at that hospital unit. The official warned about the pressure this situation has exerted on the institution's services.
According to the data presented, 40% of patients monitored in the hospital's obstetrics department are foreigners. This number reflects the significant proportion of immigrant population that uses this health unit in the region.
The hospital was designed to serve a population far lower than it currently serves. The president stated that the unit now serves almost double the population it was originally sized for, exacerbating capacity and care challenges.
The statement "there are many people who arrive at the airport and come here" illustrates the perception that proximity to Lisbon's airport contributes to many immigrants settling in the surrounding area, further increasing pressure on the region's health services.
