Infraestruturas de Portugal predicts that the departure of more than four thousand trucks from the Via de Cintura Interna (VCI) in Porto will result in a 59% reduction in heavy vehicle traffic on this route. This measure comes in the context of changes to traffic on this urban road, which is one of the busiest in the city.
However, researchers warn that unmet car demand is very high, meaning that the space left by trucks could be quickly occupied by cars. Thus, traffic relief may not be as significant as expected.
Antram, the association representing road freight transport companies, expressed concern about the consequences of this measure. The organization anticipates chaos in supply and warns that prices may rise due to disruptions in the supply chain caused by the redirection of truck traffic.
