European Heritage Days in Fundão celebrate history

oRegiões14 September 2026 at 19:20

The Municipality of Fundão prepared a set of cultural initiatives for the European Heritage Days, an initiative promoted by the Council of Europe and the European Commission. The official calendar runs from September 18 to 27, but the municipality anticipates the program with activities distributed across several parishes of the municipality. This year's edition adopts the motto "Revive, Resist, Reinvent", with the objective of reinforcing among the local population and visitors the urgency of safeguarding and preserving the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the territory.

The municipal program begins on September 15 with visits to the archaeological excavation work at the proto-historic settlement of Vale Feitoso, in the parish of Pêro Viseu. The technical team of the Municipal Museum organizes two visits, at 10:00 and 15:00, with direct accompaniment by the scientific supervisors of the studies, allowing participants to learn about the methodology of the fieldwork and the traces of ancient occupation found on the site.

The celebrations also include the Chocalhos – Transhumance Festival event, which links the memory of pastoral routes with contemporary creation, integrating references to the International Year of Pastures and Pastoralists proclaimed by the United Nations for 2026. This aspect includes the "Chavelhas – Pastoral Sculptures" exhibition associated with the ethnographic drawings of Luís Rodrigues, as well as the installation "Re-Sonância: sound readings" coordinated by Alexandre Leonardo on sound heritage linked to traditional pastoral practices.

The program continues on September 23, at 17:30, in Lavacolhos, with the public presentation of proto-historic rock engravings recently identified in that village. The closing takes place on September 24, at 18:00, at Casa do Barro, in Telhado, with the conclusion of the temporary exhibition "Dolia" on Roman ceramics found in the municipality. The program also includes the presentation of the "Aphar" notebook, the dissemination of the restructuring project for the Torre das Palavras Albano Martins, and the exhibition "Olinda Sardinha – Telhado: heritage materials" with photographic records by the researcher on local ethnological heritage.
