Mozambique has created a new protected area called Butterfly Forest, located in Lugela district. The area covers 9,341 hectares and was officially established through an order from the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries, whose document was consulted by the Portuguese news agency.
The management of the new protected area will be entrusted to local communities, which will be managed through a Community Management Council responsible for its administration. This governance model aims to directly involve local populations in the conservation of the territory.
The main objective of this initiative is to reconcile nature preservation with the economic development of the communities involved. For this purpose, the model is based on the sustainable use of natural resources, seeking to ensure that environmental protection also benefits the people living in the region.
