Judge Maria Benedita Urbano revealed that the Ratton Palace, headquarters of the Constitutional Court, received a request for the dissolution of the Chega party. The statement came in the context of a visit to the court, during which the magistrate spoke about the complexity of evaluating requests for the banning of political parties.
Benedita Urbano stressed that it is "very difficult" to determine if a political party is fascist, acknowledging the difficulty in applying objective criteria to classify a party based on its ideology.
The Constitutional Court has now clarified that it has no "pending request for the banning" of parties, contradicting the perception that had been conveyed by the judge.
The case arises at a time of political tension in Portugal, with Chega having gained significant weight in the last legislative elections, which has generated debate about the legitimacy and limits of the action of extremist parties in the Portuguese democratic system.
