The first medical treatments with electroconvulsive therapy in the Region took place this Monday, September 14. This is, according to a statement sent by the Regional Secretariat for Health and Civil Protection, a therapeutic alternative for users with severe mental illness, in which controlled electrical currents are applied to the brain that cause a brief therapeutic seizure.
The note states that it is a safe procedure, performed with rigorous monitoring and muscle relaxation. The treatment is specifically intended for patients with severe mental illnesses who do not respond adequately to other types of therapeutic intervention.
With this initiative, the Region now provides locally a treatment that was previously not accessible to its users, avoiding trips to the mainland or abroad to receive this type of mental health care.
