Saudi football authorities promised to sanction Al Taawoun fans who sang offensive chants referencing Diogo Jota during the match against Al Hilal on Saturday. The game ended with Al Hilal's 6-0 rout.
The chants were aimed at destabilizing Rúben Neves, Al Hilal's star and one of Diogo Jota's best friends and national team teammate. The fans mentioned the traffic accident that killed the 28-year-old Portuguese and his 25-year-old brother André, who died just over a year ago.
Rúben Neves reacted with irony to the chants, raising his thumb and applauding towards the rival fans, before pointing his finger to the sky. After the match, the Portuguese player said he hopes those responsible for the chants don't pray after what they did.
The Saudi Arabian Football Federation has been called upon to investigate the case and apply appropriate punishments to those responsible for the offensive chants.
