The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) issued an alert regarding the poor air quality forecast for the Portuguese mainland. The phenomenon is due to the transport of dust from northern Africa, which causes a significant increase in concentrations of inhalable particles of natural origin in the atmosphere.
These particles, of mineral and desertification origin, are transported by wind over long distances and affect air quality in several regions of the country. The situation is expected during periods when meteorological conditions favor the displacement of these air masses.
The DGS recommends that the population take special precautions, especially more vulnerable groups such as children, elderly people, and people with chronic respiratory diseases. It is advised to avoid prolonged physical exertion outdoors and maintain good hydration.
Health authorities warn of the need to monitor the situation, as air quality may improve when atmospheric conditions change and dust transport decreases.
