The Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, considered it will be difficult to implement a reduction of fuel VAT to 6%. This position comes at a time when support for citizens and sectors affected by rising fuel prices is being discussed.
The Portuguese Government intends, instead, to concentrate support on the sectors most impacted by rising fuel prices, opting for a strategy of targeted support rather than a generalized tax reduction.
Maria da Graça Carvalho added that this week a decision should be made on the resumption of targeted support for various specific sectors, including transport, taxis, firefighters, and the social sector.
This approach contrasts with a possible generalized VAT reduction, showing the executive's preference for surgical measures that directly support the sectors most vulnerable to the current energy crisis.
