China criticized alerts considered alarmist about the risks of artificial intelligence, after American technology executives supported calls to slow down the development of advanced AI models. American executives fear that AI models could escape human control and warned that a Chinese advantage could threaten American national security.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun responded to these calls at a press conference in Beijing on Monday. He said countries should promote AI development that is "open, inclusive, universally beneficial and ethical".
Guo Jiakun stated that "alarmism, confrontation, and predatory competition will only hinder the global AI governance process and will not serve anyone's interests". The comment was made in response to calls from American executives to slow down the development of cutting-edge models and to the indication that a Chinese advantage would represent risks to national security.
