The Minister of Education, Fernando Alexandre, ordered the opening of an investigation process to clarify cases of schools that reportedly refused student enrollments despite having available spots. This decision comes following reports of children who were unable to secure a place at educational establishments that had the capacity to accommodate them.
The education authorities intend to determine the specific circumstances under which these refusals may have occurred and whether there are systemic failures in the enrollment process. The investigation should make it possible to distinguish isolated incidents from potential discriminatory practices or poor management of school places.
Fernando Alexandre considered the criticism made by the Socialist Party (PS) about the education system situation to be "exaggerated." The minister argues that the questioning of schools should not be done without all responsibilities and concrete facts being established.
The investigation process will now analyze case by case the schools identified, in order to determine whether there were effectively irregularities in access to education and what measures may be implemented to prevent similar situations in the future.
