United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres participated on Sunday in the BRICS Summit Meeting in New Delhi, India. During his speech, Guterres emphasized the need to reform the institutional structures of member countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—to reflect contemporary realities, noting that the UN General Assembly adopted a new world map that highlights global changes since 1945.
Guterres advocated for deep reform of international organizations such as the UN Security Council and the Bretton Woods system, composed of the World Bank and the IMF. The UN leader called for a focus on resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability to achieve inclusive global growth, proposing four fundamental steps: financing, technology, climate justice, and peace.
The Secretary-General criticized the concentration of artificial intelligence tools among few companies and nations, warning that this situation could exacerbate social inequalities and threaten sovereignties. Regarding climate justice, Guterres warned of the imminent surpassing of the 1.5°C temperature increase limit and advocated for robust financing of $300 billion per year to mitigate climate change.
Gutterses also emphasized the need to manage critical minerals responsibly to promote jobs in producing communities, and called for respect for UN Charter obligations and international law in international crises such as those in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine. The UN leader concluded that the world is inexorably moving toward a multipolar order, where collaboration between states is essential for a better future.
