Ukraine's Prosecutor General leaves the country after corruption accusations

Observador14 September 2026 at 10:11

The Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Andrii Kostin, left the country after a dispute with anti-corruption agencies. The departure was confirmed by Kostin himself, who had held the position since July 2022.

President Volodymyr Zelensky asked Parliament to approve Kostin's dismissal without delays. The replacement of the prosecutor general had already been requested by the president to the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament.

Kostin announced criminal charges against the anti-corruption agencies that carried out searches in his office. The operation of these agencies against the Public Ministry generated an institutional crisis in the country.

The conflict occurs at a time when Ukraine has been facing a war with Russia for more than two years. The issue of corruption in the country has been a constant concern of Western allies who provide military and financial support to Kyiv.

Why this matters

This institutional conflict in Ukraine could weaken the judicial reforms that the country needs to implement as part of its European integration path. Readers are closely following the stability of anti-corruption institutions, essential for maintaining international support during the war. WHY: none
