NASCAR team members barely escaped a serious accident in the pits during Saturday night at the World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, in Illinois, near St. Louis, in the United States. Cars heading to the area for refueling and tire changes spun and dangerously advanced toward the mechanics, nearly running them over.
The race was valid for the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, NASCAR's second main division, below the Cup Series. The category brings together high-performance cars on oval circuits and, during pit stops, team members work close to the track to change tires and make adjustments to the vehicles.
The most dangerous moment occurred during the pit stop of car #19, from Joe Gibbs Racing, driven by Brent Crews. Car #88, driven by Rajah Caruth, spun and hit one of the team members. Following this, car #87, driven by Nick Sanchez, also lost control and passed centimeters away from the mechanics present at the location.
The accident interrupted the race, which needed to be stopped due to the severity of the incident in the pits. Images of the moment were recorded on video and show how close the mechanics came to being hit by the out-of-control vehicles.
