ERA Workshop: EU Environmental Impact Assessment Requirements

Notícias Portugal14 September 2026 at 09:29

The Judicial Studies Centre hosted, between 7 and 9 September 2026, a workshop on the environmental impact assessment requirements of the European Union. This event, titled "EU Environmental Impact Assessment Requirements," formed part of the project "Co-operation with national judges in the field of Environmental Law," promoted by the Academy of European Law and funded by the European Commission. The workshop had a duration of two and a half days.

During the event, participants deepened their knowledge on the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive and the Strategic Environmental Assessment Directive. Experts led sessions that included detailed analyses of the relevant legal frameworks, procedures and jurisprudence.

Among the topics addressed, judicial control and access to justice provided for in these directives was highlighted. The interconnection of these directives with other European legal instruments in the context of the Union's substantive environmental law was also examined.

Special emphasis was given to preliminary ruling procedures, considering their importance in European environmental law. Through debates and practical case studies, participants developed tools for managing complex environmental assessment procedures, emphasizing the relevance of continuous training for the effective application of environmental legislation.

Why this matters

Judges and legal professionals in Portugal benefit from this specialized training on European environmental directives, which aims to ensure the effective implementation of EU legislation on environmental impact assessment. The workshop responds to the need for continuous capacity building in the substantive environmental law of the Union, considering the complexity of procedures and the importance of preliminary ruling mechanisms. This training follows the European Commission's commitment to cooperate with national judges in the area of environmental law.
