Extinction of Chega? "It is very difficult to ban a party and say it is fascist", says Constitutional Court judge

A judge from the Constitutional Court considered that it is very difficult to ban a political party and classify it as fascist. The magistrate made this statement in the context of the debate about a possible dissolution of Chega, a party that has been the target of requests for illegality.

In February, lawyer António Garcia Pereira reinforced a request with the Public Ministry for the legal mechanisms that allow the dissolution of Chega to be activated. This request comes following previous attempts to stop the party's political activity.

The Constitutional Court judge's position suggests that, from a legal standpoint, it is not easy to demonstrate that a party should be banned due to characteristics that bring it close to fascism, highlighting the legal difficulties involved in this type of process.
