Constitutional Court judge warns that constitutional courts "are under attack"

The judge of the Portuguese Constitutional Court (TC) Maria Benedita Urbano warned today that constitutional courts "are under attack" given the rise of populism and authoritarianism in democratic societies. The magistrate indicated that these courts are targets of attack by those who want to dismantle the democratic rule of law, precisely because the Constitutional Court defends fundamental rights, of expression, assembly and political participation. The Constitutional Court also ensures that political competition is fair and equal.
