Unit II of Colégio Tamandaré, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, received on Monday a team from the Centro Municipal de Saúde Harvey Ribeiro de Souza Filho to advise students and guardians about the risks of sharing lancets during blood glucose tests conducted at a science fair on Saturday.
During the activity, a student used the same lancet — an instrument that pierces the finger to collect blood — on up to three people. Almost all participants were children. The school advised that all students who underwent the exam seek a hospital for prophylactic treatment.
By the end of Sunday afternoon, at least 23 people had sought hospitals for prophylactic treatment. Of these, 20 were treated at Hospital Municipal Lourenço Jorge, in Barra da Tijuca, and another three at a private network, according to the school.
The health team's visit to the school was scheduled to occur from 11am to 2pm, with the aim of clarifying doubts and providing guidance on the next steps after the incident.
