Portuguese Development Bank Pays for Paris Trips for Regalado and Strategic Council Members

Eco14 September 2026 at 08:30

The Banco Português de Fomento (BPF), Portugal's state-owned development bank, will pay for a luxury trip to Paris for members of its Strategic Advisory Council (CCE), composed of 20 personalities from various sectors of activity, and the chairman of the executive committee, Gonçalo Regalado. The trip is scheduled for September 19, as part of a meeting with the French sovereign bank Bpifrance.

When questioned by Correio da Manhã about the number of participants and the total cost of the trip, BPF did not disclose this data, stating that the information will be published in the bank's annual report and accounts. The public bank also stated that costs will follow "the principles of rationality and good management of public resources."

BPF acknowledges that the CCE usually invites all council members to ordinary meetings, but admits that not all members are habitually present due to "professional scheduling challenges." According to the bank, several council members will participate digitally in general sessions due to scheduling conflicts and personal commitments.

Governments want Lagarde succession at ECB negotiated by end of year

Euro Zone governments intend to reach an agreement by the end of the year on the succession of Christine Lagarde as president of the European Central Bank, as well as chief economist Philip Lane and Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel, whose terms end in 2027. According to the Financial Times, Lagarde may leave the position early in 2027, before the next French presidential elections, where Marine Le Pen appears as the favorite. The main candidates for succession are Pablo Hernández de Cos, from the Bank for International Settlements, and the former president of the Dutch central bank, Klaas Knot. The reshuffle comes amid volatility in bond markets and budgetary pressures in the EU, with the ECB having already raised interest rates twice this year to combat inflation.

Portuguese footwear unhappy with Asian hegemony wants to establish itself as a major producer

The Portuguese footwear industry is concluding a 100 million euro investment in sustainability, digitalization, artificial intelligence and new technologies to position itself as a reference industrial alternative to Asian hegemony, which concentrates 90% of world production. Portugal produced 74 million pairs in 2025 with a commercial surplus of approximately 1,000 million dollars, and 71 Portuguese companies are participating this week in fairs in Milan. APICCAPS argues that the completion of these investments does not represent a destination but the beginning of the challenge to transform technology and installed capacity into greater added value for Portugal.
