The 2026 bathing season ended yesterday in the Municipality of Mafra, running from June 13 to September 13. The municipality, which includes the beaches of Ericeira located in the only World Surf Reserve in Europe, has 12 official beaches distributed across four parishes along its coastline.

This year's season was marked by the winter storms of 2025/2026, which caused significant coastal erosion and instability in several cliffs. Calada beach was not included in the list of bathing waters, meaning it did not open for swimming during the summer, due to the destruction of access routes and cliff instability, which meant it no longer met safety conditions for swimmers.

With the official closure, active lifeguard surveillance at the beaches has ended. However, between September 14 and October 30, the beaches will have daily patrols provided by a mobile patrol lifeguard, a rescue firefighter, and a VOPE vehicle with a jet ski.

According to the National Water Resources Information System, during the 2026 bathing season, no beach in the Municipality of Mafra was prohibited for swimming due to water quality reasons.
