Meet hyrox, which mixes running and functional exercises prioritizing endurance, overcoming challenges, and collective strength

oglobo14 September 2026 at 08:15

Hyrox is a fitness modality that is becoming a craze in Brazilian gyms, combining running and functional exercises with a focus on endurance, overcoming challenges, and collective strength. The practice consists of 8 kilometers of running interspersed with 8 functional exercises distributed across stations, including jumps, weight carrying, rowing, and ball throws against the wall, among other movements.

Tax analyst Julia Pereira Palermo, 33 years old, from Rio de Janeiro, is one of the modality's enthusiasts. A regular practitioner of activities such as weightlifting, martial arts, swimming, beach volleyball, and crossfit, she found in hyrox a more playful way to exercise. Julia believes that, unlike crossfit, the movements are less complex, do not require such refined technique, and present a lower risk of injuries.

The classes are collective and some exercises are performed in pairs, which Julia highlights as a positive differentiator. According to her, having someone beside during the practice encourages people not to give up, something especially valued in a world so digitally connected.

Julia trains daily at Body Tech Vogue Square gym, in Barra da Tijuca, which also has a unit in Leblon. Throughout the country, there are already about 300 gyms that offer the modality.

Why this matters

HYROX is becoming popular in Brazilian gyms, offering a functional exercise alternative that combines cardio and strength with less technical complexity. Fitness practitioners in Rio de Janeiro and across the country can find this modality in approximately 300 gyms, with emphasis on units in Barra da Tijuca and Leblon. The modality attracts those seeking collective exercises with a lower risk of injuries compared to crossfit.
