Indonesian authorities resumed relief operations today to try to rescue 129 missing people after the shipwreck of the Virgo Transport 8 ferry, which was making the connection between Java and Borneo islands. The accident has already caused at least six deaths.
The ferry was carrying 213 passengers and 30 crew members, having departed on Saturday from Surabaya, in Java, heading to Banjarmasin, in Borneo. Contact with the vessel was lost in the early hours of Sunday.
The head of the national search and rescue agency, Mohammad Syafii, confirmed the number of fatalities and is coordinating rescue operations to try to locate the missing.
