Maria Benedita Urbano, judge of the Portuguese Constitutional Court, confirmed that that body received a request for the dissolution of the Chega party. The magistrate publicly addressed this issue, taking a position on the matter.
The judge stated that she believes extreme parties should be banned in Portugal, demonstrating a personal opinion in favor of restricting political parties considered extremist.
However, Benedita Urbano highlighted that it is very difficult to ban a party and classify it as fascist, acknowledging the legal and political difficulties inherent in a decision of this nature.
The request now awaits analysis by the Constitutional Court, which will have to rule on the legality and merits of the request for the dissolution of Chega.
