Portugal had only 15% women in ministerial portfolios in the last five decades, according to a study released today. This number shows the persistence of strong female underrepresentation in top positions of the Portuguese executive.
The study concludes that women still "disproportionately depend on technical credentials to access" governmental power. In other words, while men can reach ministerial positions with different professional profiles, women need to demonstrate higher technical competencies to be considered for these same positions.
This research sheds light on the persistent barriers women face in Portuguese politics, showing that access to executive power remains profoundly unequal between genders in the country.
