A study released this Tuesday revealed that Portugal had only 15% women ministers over the last five decades, showing strong female underrepresentation in executive power. The research analyzed the composition of Portuguese governments from the 1970s to the present day.
The study concludes that women still "disproportionately depend on technical credentials to access power" compared to men. This means that, to reach ministerial positions, women often need to demonstrate higher academic or professional qualifications than their male colleagues.
The research was publicly presented today, aiming to demonstrate the persistent inequalities in female political representation in Portugal. The data contrasts with the proportion of women in the general population and the Portuguese electorate.
