Duarte Afonso, consultant and former head of Madeira's tourism promotion, shares his years of experience working at the destination, during which he organized and accompanied hundreds of travel agents and tour operators on familiarization visits. The challenge in these visits was to show in just three or four days everything that makes Madeira unique, including nature, gastronomy, culture, wine, levadas and traditions.
During these visits, one question frequently arose: what is the best time to visit Madeira? Afonso's answer was always the same: all seasons are good, offering only different experiences. Spring brings flowers and hiking, summer invites the sea and festivals, autumn reveals the grape harvests, and winter offers mild temperatures and one of the most emblematic Christmas programs in the world.
Another aspect that caught the author's attention was the agents' curiosity about where locals from Madeira usually go, seeking places frequented by residents and authentic experiences. Afonso concludes that the best marketing doesn't happen through million-dollar advertising campaigns, but rather when experiences are provided that deserve to be shared. In the digital age, every visitor is also an ambassador, where spontaneous recommendations and positive reviews have more impact than any advertisement.
The author argues that destination marketing is not the exclusive responsibility of promotion entities, but also of hotels, restaurants, guides, local producers and the residents themselves. Madeira's greatest advantage is its authenticity, which no marketing budget can buy. The strongest destinations are not those that promote themselves best, but those that leave the best stories to tell.
