The Government is preparing a pilot project to reduce the wild boar population in areas of the country where a higher concentration of these animals is identified, through the payment of compensation for each specimen culled.
The measure was announced by the Minister of Agriculture and the Sea, José Manuel Fernandes, who acknowledged the existence of an excess of wild boar in certain regions.
The executive thus intends to combat the problems caused by the excess of this species, which includes damage to agriculture and potential risks to public health.
This pilot project will function as a temporary solution while a more comprehensive strategy for managing wild boar populations in Portugal is implemented.
