The American Cleaning Institute (ACI), a North American association dedicated to cleaning products and practices, recommends that bathroom rugs be washed once a week, along with towels. This frequency should be viewed as a priority household cleaning task, rather than only washing when it shows stains or unpleasant odors. The recommendation is based on the fact that the rug absorbs water repeatedly and remains in one of the most humid spaces in the home.
The recommended frequency can vary depending on use. When the rug is used by only one person, experts consulted by Southern Living magazine suggest washing every one to two weeks. However, when the bathroom is shared by several people, the weekly routine is more advisable. For a guest bathroom rug, used only occasionally, experts admit intervals close to one month, as long as it remains clean, dry, and with little use.
Moisture control is fundamental to limiting mold growth, which can develop in practically any material when there is sufficient humidity. After bathing, it is important to avoid letting the rug remain soaked and without air circulation. If it gets very wet, it should be lifted from the floor and left to dry completely before the next use. Increasing ventilation through a window or extraction system also helps prevent recurring mold.
Signs such as damp smell, stains, or constant wetness are indicators that you should not wait for the next scheduled wash. These signs may mean that bathroom conditions favor moisture accumulation and justify more frequent cleaning, combined with better ventilation.
