The Madeira archipelago experienced seismic activity again in the early hours of this Sunday, September 13, 2026. According to official data from the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), an earthquake was detected at 06:35, with its epicentre located north of Porto Santo, at coordinates 34.210 North and 16.392 West.
The seismic tremor registered a magnitude of 2.0 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres. These values indicate that it was a low-intensity event, situated on the threshold of a microseism, the lowest category of earthquakes.
So far, no material damage or situations of danger to the population have been reported. Seismic activity in the Madeira archipelago region is relatively frequent due to its geographical location, although most events are of low intensity and do not cause significant consequences.
