Chega challenged the Socialist Party to approve on the 24th the reduction of VAT on fuels through legislation and the application of Zero VAT on the food basket. At a press conference, Chega's leader, André Ventura, accused the Socialist leader, José Luís Carneiro, of "hypocrisy" and lying to the Portuguese, stating that the PS has been avoiding lowering taxes.
In response, the PS secretary-general accused Chega of trying to deceive the electorate. José Luís Carneiro recalled that André Ventura's party had previously voted against Socialist Party proposals on this matter.
Chega's challenge comes at a time when the fiscal issue is at the center of the political debate in Portugal, with parties vying for positions on the best way to support Portuguese families in the face of the cost of living.
The proposal will be voted on the 24th, with the Socialist Party deciding whether to approve or reject the tax reduction measures presented by Chega.
