UBI Creates Guide for the Responsible Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence

oRegiões13 September 2026 at 08:00

The University of Beira Interior (UBI), headquartered in Covilhã, developed and published the Guide for the Responsible Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence, a document that aims to establish conduct parameters for the entire academic community. The guide is intended for students, faculty, researchers and technical and management staff, seeking to reconcile technological integration with ethical and pedagogical safeguards.

The initiative was coordinated by the rectorial team through the Vice-Rectory for Digital Strategy, Information Management and Human Resources. UBI assumes an openness posture towards new technological models, refusing blind interdiction, but imposing clear boundaries of action. The approved text determines that the use of AI tools should not be prohibited and should be encouraged when properly delimited and declared.

The document addresses structural themes such as ethical use, academic integrity principles, protection of personal and institutional data, and assessment of learning. It also includes guidelines for faculty to assess students' actual work without neglecting new productivity tools, providing parameters for detecting content produced by generative systems.

The guide defines recommended, limited and discouraged uses, establishing true red lines for the educational, scientific and administrative domains. It prohibits or restricts practices that may compromise intellectual authorship, the truthfulness of research projects or rigor in handling sensitive information. The document is available for public and internal consultation through the university's institutional portal.

Why this matters

The guide directly affects students, faculty and researchers at UBI, who now have an official framework of reference for the use of generative AI tools. The definition of clear limits in academic assessment and research protects the integrity of academic work, while guidelines on data protection alert to the risks of using external platforms. The initiative comes in a context of growing AI adoption and represents one of the first institutional responses at university level in Portugal.

Anthropic's AI Warning May Weigh on Chipmaker Stocks; Sector Outlook Intact

Market analysts warn that calls from AI industry executives for a slowdown in technology development — including Anthropic's recent warning — could trigger an initial wave of selling in chipmaker and supply chain stocks on Monday. However, experts point out that the impact should be limited long-term, as demand for chips, energy, and computing capacity continues to outpace supply, supporting investments in computing infrastructure and sector profits.
